Shou Sugi Ban
Wood

Japanese charred wood cladding and beams, hand-finished in traditional Kyoto technique.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Burned by hand. Sealed for generations.

Shou sugi ban is the ancient Japanese practice of charring cedar to preserve it. FormHaus sources old-growth Japanese cedar and chars each plank by hand using traditional three-board burning — no gas torches, no shortcuts.

The charred surface is then wire-brushed to reveal the grain and sealed with natural tung oil. The result is a cladding material that is naturally pest-resistant, fire-retardant, and dimensionally stable for 80+ years.
